After our first day of Venice we had to disembark the Celebrity Silhouette cruise ship. We were sad to see the end of our cruise, it was now on to our accommodation in Venice. After some deliberation of how to best get to our apartment, we decided to take a water taxi.
Water Taxis are a wonderful way to get around Venice, expect to pay for it. What it offers is convenience. For us, luggage and getting as close to our accommodation helped make things easy. It was a great experience watching our driver navigate his way through the smaller canals to get us to the other side of Venice.
After finding our apartment we tidied up and settled in for our stay.
The girls went shopping and after their return it was down to St Giovanni and Paolo next to Ospedale about 200 metres down from our apartment.
A little more exploring for the afternoon and planning for the next couple of days and it was off to dinner and on to our next activity to tick off the list.
Vivaldi: The Four Seasons
One of my boxes to tick off on this trip was to hear Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over forty operas, the Four Seasons being his most famous works.
Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741), was a Catholic priest, and virtuoso violinist, born in Venice. Recognised as one of the greatest Baroque composers, his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe.
So for our evening of culture, especially for Keith who was more of a Cold Chisel fan, it was off to the concert. The great thing about the location of the concert was it was in a small church hall at the corner of Piazza San Marco, St Marks Square. When you entered the hall it felt you were going back in time of creative Baroque music. As Vivaldi’s father was a Violin player at St Marks Chapel, there was no reason not to believe he could have been in this church hall.
The concert was amazing, it was performed by Virtuosi Di Venezia a baroque ensemble. They did a fantastic performance and it was impressive listening to a performance without any amplification, it can be done.
